Les Blakebrough Southern Ice Porcelain bowl, c2004

$300.00
SOLD

Les Blakeborough's career spanned six decades, during which he became one of Australia's most acclaimed and influential ceramic artists. Blakeborough won a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Italy in 1974, a Churchill Fellowship in 1992, and became a Member of the Order of Australia in 2013.

His pioneering work in creating Southern Ice Porcelain in the 1990s garnered international attention. This snow white porcelain, fired at 1300 degrees is marketed globally to ceramicists today, and Blakeborough was commissioned to make Tasmania's wedding gift to Mary Donaldson and Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark using this incredible material.

His work is held in all Australian state galleries, the National Gallery of Australia and the Commonwealth Collection (UK), as well as national collections in Japan, Italy, Norway, and Denmark.

This bowl features an unglazed porcelain exterior with a pale blue interior glaze. An organic raised motif reflects themes of the ocean and landscape forms that feature in much of his work. The bowl is in fabulous overall condition. There is a tiny dark mark which may be an impurity during firing. You can see this in the images and the video. There may be some minor traces of wear/use on the interior of the bowl.
