Art Nouveau Glazed Vase c1900s

$160.00
SOLD

This delightful ceramic vase is typical of the Art Nouveau period (1888-1910) - a tall elegant shape echoes the sinuous shapes of plants and flowers that so often feature in decorative arts of the period, which are repeated in the petal-like overlays around the bowl of the vase. Earthy, jewel colours reinforce this theme, and the application of new ceramic techniques to mimic brass inlays is typical of this era.

There is an inscribed number to the base, and although our research has not been able to pin this model down, similar examples are attributed to Amphora and other makers in the Austria-Czechoslovakia-Germany region. There are also allusions to the closely linked Arts and Crafts movement emanating from Britain at around the same time - the vase is definitely hand-crafted and retains a sense of its artisanal origins.

The vase is in good condition for its age, with some typical signs of use. There are no major chips or cracks.
