Charlotte Rhead Bursley Ware Trellis Water Jug 1930s

$130.00

Charlotte Rhead is one of Britain’s most influential ceramic designers from the Art Deco period. Having hailed from an artistic family, and studied at the Fenton School of Arts. Rhead was at the forefront of incorporating Art Deco styles into pottery, which was a defining aesthetic of the time. Her tubelining technique allowed for intricate and colourful patterns, and her distinctive style was not only  artistically significant but also commercially successful, with a lasting impact on the ceramics industry which endures today.

The Trellis design is denoted by the pattern number TL3 and was designed by Rhead during her time at Burgess and Leigh Pottery, between 1926 and 1931, under the name Bursley Ware. It features her signature tubelining technique to denote a delightful trellis pattern on a cream base with stylised flowers and leaves in orange and brown.

This piece is in good vintage condition, with signs of wear consistent with age and use. At around 90 years old, there may be minor losses to some coloured areas, and light crazing is evident in the glaze. Overall, the condition is good with no chips or cracks.
